1. TAKE OWNERSHIP
Harshest pill to swallow, but this is one of the best mindset shifts you should adopt to ensure the success of your business.
You might like or hate the point at which you’re in life right now. In either case, it’s all on you. Your past decisions led you here. Whether you like it or not.
The sooner you realize that it’s your responsibility to create the life you desire, the sooner you’ll realize your full potential.
To be responsible for your life is not a condemnation; it’s an act of freedom.
Often, we tend to focus on all the things we can’t control in life, forgetting that we’re still the ones sitting in the driver’s seat.
You get to decide the direction. You have the power to press the gas pedal. And you also have control over the steering wheel. How liberating is that?
When you fully realize that your current state of life depends on your past decisions, you acknowledge the power and impact that every current decision you make will have on your future.
No one is coming to show you the road to success. No one is coming to tell you to invest your time and energy in your business.
If your blog is something you’re passionate about and want to have in the future, you will know – deep down – that you need to work on it today.
Sure, I can share with you the blogging mistakes I made to shorten your way to success, but I’m not in control of your time. I cannot take action for you.
You decide what actions to take now. Just remember that you’re deciding your future outcomes.
So, whenever you struggle to make a decision, think of it backward: “Is this going to take me closer to where I want to go?”.
2. ENVISION THE “WHY”
Here’s a 5-minute self-reflection question that I’d like you to ask yourself: “Why do you do what you’re doing?”
It is astonishing to me to realize the number of people who go through the motions of life without ever asking themselves “Why?”.
So, before you move on with your business by setting goals and strategies, take a step back and ask yourself: “Why do I want to create this business?”.
Without a “why” you’re not going anywhere. Your “why” will be the driving motion, the force that will allow you to push through all those moments in which quitting would be so easy.
If there’s one thing I learned is that blogging is challenging. You have to put in a decent amount of work before you can see the results. You might feel discouraged many times in your blogging journey. It happens to everyone – even to the best bloggers.
What determines whether you’re going to fail or succeed in your business depends, in part, on your “why” behind it.
Take me as an example: I created “Purposeful Dreamers” to be a source of inspiration, motivation, and knowledge for everyone feeling lost in their 20s. For all the young people that know they’re destined for more, but don’t quite exactly know what that more is or how to get there.
Once you find your “why“, hold on to it.
Make sure you’re reminded of it every single day:
- hang it on your walls
- put your vision on your desktop screen and wallpaper
- journal about it daily
- repeat it as a daily mantra
Don’t think that once you find you why, it’s like checking off another box from your to-do list.
Your why is coming with you along your journey.
You might be the one sitting in the driver’s seat, but he’s your passenger. You’re the one driving the car, but he’s the one in charge of the navigator, telling you which direction to follow.
3. BELIEVE IN ABUNDANCE
There is enough creativity and success for everyone. Someone else’s success won’t take anything away from you.
Let those two sentences sink in for a minute. There is enough creativity and success for everyone. Someone else’s success won’t take anything away from you.
You see, from a very young age, we are put into situations that want us to compete with each other and, ultimately, succeed. You can experience that at school and, later on, in your work environment.
This behavior of perceiving others as possible threats has deeper roots, though. It derives from a basic human instinct: survival.
The problem with this primordial mindset is that it distorts our vision of the world: making it look like a place full of threats when all it is is a place full of opportunities!
Just because there are thousands of blogs out there, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t any space and success left for yours.
Nobody explains things as you do. No other blogger shares your same blogging journey. Nobody is like you. That’s your power.
That’s why there’s space for everyone in the world: so that we can all share our unique voices.
Here is one of the key mindset shifts to adopt if you want to boost your business success: look at others from a place of encouragement and admiration, and don’t consider them your competition.
They’re just like you: they have a dream. That doesn’t mean you should give up on your dream, should you?
Looking at others should be your fuel: you should be motivated to see that it is possible and to what extent it is possible.
Your dream can become a reality. You have external proof of it.
Take inspiration, learn, encourage, and approach others the same way you would want others to do with you.
Success is a never-ending resource. Creativity is a never-ending flow.
We are all playing the same game of life: just because someone is ahead of you, that doesn’t imply you should quit the game.
4. BECOME BEFORE ACHIEVING
“With outcome-based habits, the focus is on what you want to achieve. With identity-based habits, the focus is on who you wish to become”
– James Clear
The following concept derives from the book “Atomic Habits”, written by James Clear. To explain it in short, he says that: “The key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first”. What does this mean?
Have you ever noticed how we typically set our goals? It would look something like this:
- When you want to lose weight → You set the goal of “Losing 5 kg”
- If you have just launched your blog → The goal is “Increasing your blog traffic”
- If you want to be more mindful in your day → You set the goal of “Meditating daily for 5 minutes”
Can you notice a pattern? We tend to focus on the outcome first, then comes the behavior – and, usually, we leave ourselves out of the equation.
By setting goals based on the outcomes you hope to achieve, the consequent change will take place only on the surface, not within.
How can you change this?
If you take the examples above, when setting identity-based goals, they would look something like this:
- I am the type of person who eats healthy, nourishing food and is very active throughout the day
- I am a successful blogger who writes and works on her blog every day
- I am a person who is focused and present
Then, take small steps that get you closer to this new identity you’re trying to create for yourself. Beliefs supported by action will create new outcomes.
So, if you want to increase the success of your business, here’s one of the essential mindset shifts you must adopt: create new beliefs about yourself before setting your business goals.
Start acting like the person you aspire to become.
5. “I GET TO” MENTALITY
You don’t have to work on making your blog a successful business, but you get to do it. In fact, you get to take smaller steps, each day, that bring you closer to the ideal vision that you have of your dream life.
You don’t have to write every day, rather you get to do it. Maybe it is something that enlightens you and makes you feel alive.
You don’t have to start a newsletter, but you get to do it. So that you can establish a deeper connection with your fellow readers, listen to their problems, and provide them with solutions.
It is all about the way you perceive things.
For sure, there are many things in life that you have to do but – hopefully – your business belongs to the category of things that you get to do (because you want to)!
You get to take daily steps that are bringing you closer to living your dream life. Isn’t that amazing?
Remember: reality is not a reflection of the external world. Reality is the way we see and perceive things.
By shifting your mindset from a simple “I have to” or “I should” to “I get to”, you will send out higher vibrations to the Universe.
After all, you don’t have to live your dream life…unless you decide you want to.
6. LET GO OF THE IMPOSTER SYNDROME
There was a belief that I was holding on to for so long before finally launching my blog. It was that I wasn’t enough of an expert in the personal development niche.
When that might still be the case, I also realized that I know more than some other people do and – by making my content visible – I could help them in their journey.
You don’t have to be an expert to start. You will learn so many things along the way while helping others as well.
Here’s another truth: you will never feel ready.
One of the most powerful mindset shifts you can adopt to ensure the success of your business is to realize that there is no better moment to start doing something than right now.
If you’re waiting for the inspiration to kick in, for the stability to come around, or for success to come knocking at your front door…I’m afraid you’re only wasting your time.
Learn to let go of all your self-limiting beliefs, stop believing you’re “not good enough” and become who you’ve always wanted to be.
A great part of your problems would disappear if you just started to believe in yourself a little bit more.
There will always be somebody out there who knows more, is doing more, and achieves more than you do. That doesn’t mean you are worth less.
That only means that there is still room for improvement.
You are enough as of right now. Don’t be afraid to show the world your potential.
7. NO HIGH TOLLS FOR SUCCESS
It’s not true that success only comes to those who work hard.
Surely, hard work might enhance your chances to succeed – but it’s not guaranteed.
If you sacrifice your sleep and your relationships to only focus on growing your business, you might become successful – but at what cost?
We are in 2023 and we’re not worshipping workaholics – not anymore! Our new mantra is to “Work smarter, not harder”.
The truth is: you can still become successful and manage to have a social life. And get 7 hours of restful sleep. No need to damage your physical and mental health.
Let’s not idolize those unrealistic routines that make you as successful as miserable.
After hearing about so many experiences of burnout, many people might have decided that staying in the comfort zone of their mediocrity would be safer.
I’m here to tell you this: you will regret not going after your dreams. So, go for it!
Create a schedule that allows you to both personally thrive but also allows your business to grow – without it taking a toll on your mental and physical health.
I know that creating a blogging schedule – especially when you’re just starting out – is a complicated task. For this reason, I wrote a blog post in which I shine some light on “My Blogging Schedule as a Beginner Blogger”. It’s worth checking it out!
The way in which you approach your business, the way you think of it – oh, and also of yourself while running it – have an impact on the outcomes you get.
If you want to turn your blog into a successful business, the first thing you need to invest in is your mindset. Maybe you won’t see immediate results, but it will be a game-changer in the long run.
Start making these mindset shifts and slowly you’ll be creating your path to your business success.
Remember that success is not an easy journey, but I believe in you. I know you can do it!
If you didn’t have the ability to reach your dreams, you wouldn’t have those dreams in the first place.
