Whether you’re a college student or working at a corporate job, the sunnier days and warmer weather are making it harder to stay motivated to work on whatever you must get done – especially when all you want to do is tanning at the beach.

If you’re struggling with finding the right motivation to keep pushing through – you’re in the right place! In this article, you’ll learn about 5 things you can do to get motivated – even and especially on those days when you don’t really feel like it.

So, are you ready for an instant motivational boost? Then, let’s get started!

1. Set only one goal

When your mind is all over the place and your motivation is at an all-time low, the first thing you’ve got to do is to take a step back and ask yourself: “Is it helpful to have many things to work on even if I know I’m not motivated at all?”.

Go through all of the tasks, goals, and things you’re working on and decide what’s the most important one.

It might seem counterproductive, but don’t you think it’s better to pour your 100% into one thing, instead of doing a poor trying to do everything?

If you’re going through a phase in life where you’re struggling with motivation, ask yourself: “What’s the one goal I want to keep focusing on? What’s the most important thing, right now?”.

2. Make work more fun

The second step to getting motivated is to make whatever you have to work on more fun.

Take the things you dread the most – whether it’s working on a school project or a presentation for your boss – and find ways to make that more interesting and fun.

You’ll be more likely to keep working on something if you’re not dreading the whole process ahead, don’t you think?

Here are some examples on how you can make things more fun:

  • Create specific playlists (one for writing your research paper, one for running, one for cleaning the house, etc)
  • Set small rewards for yourself (that could be watching an episode of your favorite TV show after you’ve studied, or buying yourself flowers after an important work presentation)
  • Document and share your journey (like sharing your 30-day glow up challenge on TikTok to be consistent with it, or doing an online study session with a friend)

3. Take time to recharge

So, you’re stressing about not being motivated to work on your goals, things, and projects; but, let me ask you: “When was the last time you took a break?”. Like a real break. One in which you didn’t feel guilty for resting or enjoying yourself.

One reason why your motivation is gone is that you’re on the verge of burnout: you’re pushing yourself too hard, even when there’s little to no energy left in you.

Before moving onto the next thing you have to do, I want you to take a break. Take the time you need to recharge.

How do you get recharged? Is it with a:

  • Long walk in the park?
  • Phone call to a friend?
  • Weekend getaway?
  • Creative hobby?
  • No-screen day?

Only you know what replenishes your energy.

Just make sure you’re not spending all day in bed, watching Netflix and calling that a “recharge day” – cause that’s more of a way to escape reality. While I do believe you need to rest and relax, there are better and more engaging ways to spend a cozy afternoon at home than bedrotting. 😉

4. Find small joys in your day

How do you keep going, when you feel not motivated at all to work on what you’re supposed to? Well, another strategy is to make your days feel lighter and brighter. You must find things that make you happier and do more of those.

What are the small things in life that bring you joy? Maybe it’s:

  • Enjoying a slow morning
  • Curling up in bed with a good book
  • Watching an episode of your favorite TV show
  • Spending time in nature
  • Walking your dog
  • Listening to music on your way to work
  • Journaling before falling asleep

How can you make life more exciting? Find your small pockets of joy and make sure you fill your days with those things.

5. Picture future scenarios

When you’re still having a hard time staying motivated and keep working, I want you to play the future scenarios game. Let me tell you how it works!

I want you to imagine two scenarios.

First, imagine that you allow yourself to give up. You stop working on whatever you have to do, and stop making progress, because you have no motivation. Now you feel great because you don’t have to do the work, but how will you feel then?

For the second scenario, I want you to imagine you keep working on your things, even if you struggle and feel like you want to give up. No matter how hard it gets, you keep pushing through. At first, or while you’re at it, it feels like hell – doesn’t it? But how do you feel at the end, when you can look back and see how far you’ve come?

Now it’s your choice.

Do you prefer staying comfortable now, only to feel like a failure later? Or, do you prefer pushing through now, only to enjoy your success afterwards?

Conclusion

That’s all from me today!

I know it’s not easy to keep moving forward when you’re going through hard times, or when you simply feel like you’re done.

You’ll never feel motivated all the time to keep working on what matters to you – nobody does.

But, I also want you to remember that you’re capable of more than you think. Keep going, because you’ve got this!
