Is there anything more exciting than planning for a new year?! As another year comes to an end, everyone (and their dogs) is getting ready to set new goals, hoping to make the most out of the fresh start ahead.
But here’s the truth: that initial excitement often wears off by February, which is exactly when most people fall off track with their healthy habits… and waste yet another year.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve promised yourself that this year will be your year – and I’m here to show you exactly how you can make it happen! 😉
Are you ready for an intense New Year planning session? Then, let’s get started!

Why Is Planning the New Year Ahead Important
Whether you’re a Type-A (like me) or someone who prefers to take life spontaneously, the truth is that planning for the new year increases your chances of achieving your goals!
Research shows that people are 42% more likely to achieve their goals if they write them down.
There are two reasons why writing down your goals works:
- It serves as a visual reminder of the vision you have for your life
- It helps you encode the information, making it easier to take aligned action
If you’re serious about achieving your goals in 2026, it’s time for you to… do the planning.

Without further ado, let’s talk about the steps you must take to plan your life for the new year.
Step 1. Reflect on the Past Year
Before moving onto your next big goal and list of resolutions, I want you to take a moment to reflect on the year you’ve just lived.
It’s so easy to look ahead all the time, at what’s next, and so forgetting to see how far we’ve already come.
Ask yourself:
- What went well this year?
- What lessons did I learn?
- What achievements, big or small, am I proud of?
Take a moment to embrace the abundance of your life as it is.
Sure, maybe you’re not the best version of yourself yet. Maybe you’re not living your dream life yet. But you’re getting there.
Today you are one step closer than you were yesterday.
Today, you’re further along your personal growth journey than you were one year ago.
Any improvement – no matter how small – is worth celebrating.
Don’t be so focused on the destination that you forget to enjoy the journey.

Step 2. Conduct a Life Audit
Now that you’ve acknowledged how far you’ve come, it’s time to get crystal clear on where you are in life.
The “Wheel of Life” is a powerful tool for a life audit.
This technique involves assessing a score from 0 (unsatisfied) to 10 (completely satisfied) to every area of your life, such as:
- Personal Growth
- Health
- Mindset
- Relationships
- Creativity
- Happiness
- Career
- Finance
This gives you a clear picture of which areas require the most focus in your New Year planning.
Step 3. Brainstorm Ways to Level Up
Once you know where you stand, brainstorm ways to achieve Level 10 in each life area.
I mean, I don’t want you to feel overwhelmed but tell me: “Why would you settle for good when you could be great?!”.
If you can score a 10 on all areas, why not go for it?!
You don’t need to tackle everything at once — pick the areas that matter most, and create an action plan. (I’ll help you with that, no worries! 😉 )
Step 4. Choose Your Word of the Year
A word of the year serves as your North Star, guiding your choices and habits throughout the new year.
Some popular options are:
- Balance
- Connection
- Growth
- Joy
- Fulfillment
- Adventure
- Gratitude
- Abundance
- Resilience
- Intuition
- Mindful
- Peace
- Discipline
- Creativity
- Purpose
Why Is It Important to Choose a Word of the Year?
The word you set for the year ahead will help you navigate through life as you face new challenges and daily choices.
Let’s say you chose the word “connection”…
It’s a random Saturday afternoon, that you’re spending scrolling the time away since it’s rainy and gloomy outside. You have nothing better to do than scroll on TikTok and Instagram, looking at how much fun others are having while you sink into a bubble of self-pity, loneliness, and discouragement.
Well, since your word is “connection” – why don’t you seek it?
You get reminded of your word for the year, so you pick up the phone and call a friend. Next thing you know, you’re on your way to the mall for an uplifting shopping run with your bestie!
Here’s another example: this time, you’ve chosen “discipline”.
You got home last night from a 2-week vacation, and now you have to go back to your routine. (Is there anything worse?!)
You look at your to-do list: you have to clean, cook, work out, and catch up on emails. Obviously, you don’t feel like doing any of these – your mind is still in vacation mode!
But, since your word is “discipline” – you ask yourself: “How would a disciplined person behave?”.
While it might be easier to indulge in extra time off, you also know that those things won’t get done by themselves. So, you pull up your sleeves and get to work – yes, even if it’s hard! Why? Because that’s what a disciplined person would do 😉
📌 SHORT ON TIME? PIN IT FOR LATER! 📌

Step 5. Set Your New Year Goals and Resolutions
Now it’s time to turn reflection into action.
Keep your word of the year in mind as you decide on the list of goals and resolutions you’d like to achieve this year.
For example, if your word is “connection”, your goals could include:
- Attend a social event weekly
- Call or text with a family member every day
- Reach out to a friend every week
- Plan a romantic date monthly
- Limit screen time to one hour per day
Step 6. Create Your Action Plan
Take your goals and let’s break them into manageable steps:
Quarterly Planning
First, split your year into four quarters:
- Q1: January – March
- Q2: April – June
- Q3: July – September
- Q4: October – December
Focus on 1 – 3 areas of your life per quarter.
Monthly Planning
Let’s say you’ve decided to improve your relationships during the first quarter of the year, in particular focusing on
- Friendships in January
- Love in February
- Family in March
Now, all you have to do is set specific goals for each month. For example:
- January goals
- Reach out to a friend every week
- Attend at least one social event per week
- Go to new places to find a like-minded community
- February goals
- Organize a date night bi-weekly
- Practice active listening
- Do small acts of love randomly
- March goals
- Call a family member once a week
- Set personal boundaries
- Be open to accepting different points of view
Weekly Planning
Now, it’s time to put it on your calendar – or else it won’t happen!
Pro tip: don’t fill your calendar only with things you must do, but also make time and space for what you want to do.
Small changes can lead to big result 😉
Step 7. Hold Yourself Accountable
You’ve heard it before and I’m gonna say it once more: the secret to success is consistency!
There are several ways you could hold yourself accountable this year:
- Use a habit tracker
- Share your goals with a friend, relative, or partner
- Do monthly and weekly check-ins
- Share your journey online for extra motivation
- Finding an accountability buddy
With this New Year planning framework, you have everything you need to live your best year yet!
