How to Finally Become a Morning Person

START GRADUALLY

Here’s the first rule: don’t go cold turkey!

If your current routine is going to bed at 2 AM and waking up at 11, you can’t expect to become a morning person overnight.

You must start slowly and proceed gradually.

The best advice is to start by setting up your alarm 10 to 15 minutes earlier than usual.

You can then proceed to anticipate your wake-up time, but always keep it at 15-minute intervals.

Do you know why most people fail when trying to become a morning person? Because they set unrealistic expectations on themselves!

They see these fantastic routines of people waking up at 4 AM, hitting the gym for 2 hours, coming home, showering, journaling, reading, and having breakfast – all while feeling amazing – and think they can do so too.

Don’t get me wrong: they could totally have the same lifestyle, but…it’s built over time.

They don’t see how many failures and trials there are behind those successful morning routines. They don’t see the struggles, the snooze buttons, the brain fogs because of a lack of sleep, or the other habits that support that lifestyle.

Whether your goal is to start waking up at 4 AM or simply wake up early enough to not have to rush out the door every day on your way to work, the best thing you can do is: anticipate your wake-up time (gradually).

DEFINE YOUR PRIORITIES

Why do you want to start waking up early?

What’s your reason?

How is that going to affect other areas of your life?

If you’re committed to becoming a morning person, there must be a reason why you want to make the switch.

What is your “why”? It could be to:

  • Finally have the time to work on your blog
  • Start your days on your terms, before the world creeps in
  • Move your body
  • Dedicate some time to your hobbies
  • Read
  • Have more time in the day to get it all done

Whatever your reason is, make sure you’re aware of your “why” for waking up early.

After all, it’s what will help you push through in those hard mornings in which the last thing you’d want to do is get out of bed…

The amazing thing about the morning routines is that there’s no one like another.

Your morning routine should be tailored to you. To your needs. To what you consider important.

So, if you really want to become a morning person, first make sure you know what your priorities for the morning are. Once you’re clear on those,  waking up early will be (slightly) easier.

THE 5-SECOND RULE

If there’s one rule that completely changed my life is the 5-second rule, by Mel Robbins. It’s so powerful and life-changing that she even wrote a book about it!

What’s the 5-second rule? Well, in short: whenever you have to do something (that you don’t want to do), you must count down “5-4-3-2-1” and then…do it!

Sounds simple, right? But trust me: it’s not that easy!

The 5-second rule is one of the golden tricks to help you become a morning person. Here’s why…

Picture this: it’s 5 in the morning and you hear your alarm ring. In a few seconds, your brain has already started thinking about thousands of reasons why getting out of bed seems like a bad idea:

  • It’s cold
  • It’s dark
  • Work will be stressful today
  • You slept badly
  • 5 more minutes won’t hurt
  • I mean, you can try again tomorrow…right?

Your brain wants you to stay comfortable – so it will do anything to keep you in bed, far away from life’s threats.

BUT.

If you start using the 5-second rule, you’ll outsmart your brain.

By counting down, you’ll distract your brain from the worst-case scenarios and you’ll simply…get moving!

5-4-3-2-1…Do it! 😉

INCLUDE A MORNING JOY

Think about all those times you woke up feeling excited.

Maybe it was because you had an early flight to catch. Or before your first day at university. Or maybe, it was seriously Christmas Day!

What’s the common factor here? You were genuinely excited!

That’s what made it so easy to get out of bed – no matter how many hours of sleep you got. Right?

So, if you want to become a morning person, you need to bring the same energy – or excitement – to your days!

What is something small that brings you joy? How can you include it in your mornings?

Here are some examples:

  • Treat yourself to a special coffee every morning
  • Try new healthy but delicious breakfast ideas
  • Pamper yourself with a 10-step skincare routine to make your skin glow
  • Curl up with your favorite book sipping a cup of tea
  • Take 10 minutes to simply pet your dog before work

Whatever it is that brings you a little joy, make sure that’s how you start your day.

IMPROVE YOUR BEDTIME ROUTINE

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that every morning routine needs to be backed up by a strong, solid night routine.

Yes, the success of your day starts the night before!

So, if you’re serious about becoming a morning person, you must look at how you’re winding down in the evening.

What’s your night routine?

Do you come home from work and lay on the couch until you pass out watching Netflix?

Or do you clean up your space before tucking yourself into bed with a hot tea and a book in your hands?

Like in the morning, your bedtime routine should be tailored to your unique needs.

In general, though, there are a series of “rules” you can adopt to make sure you have a good night’s sleep every night.

Here are the best wind-down techniques:

  • Avoid exposure to blue light (TV, phone, laptop) at least 1-2 hours before sleeping
  • Eat your last meal 3 hours before going to bed
  • Do relaxing activities, such as reading or journaling
  • Take a warm bath or shower
  • Relax the body with some gentle stretches or a short meditation

Work on improving your bedtime routine, because that’s the final secret to being a morning person!
