1. Define your needs before setting goals for the fall
Just like not everyone starts the year with the same resolutions, not everyone enters fall with the same energy, motivation, or mindset.
Before you plan and set new goals, you need to figure out where you’re at in the first place.
Ask yourself:
- Do I feel energised – or exhausted?
- Am I clear on what my next steps are – or feeling way too lost?
- Do I want to lock in for the next 4 months – or lean towards cozy routines and self-care?
The key here is to listen to your body and mind.
Before jumping into your next goals, new routines, or starting new habits – ask yourself this simple question:
“What do I really need more of, this fall?”
Identify your needs first; only then you’ll have enough clarity to set the realistic and aligned goals.

2. Drop unrealistic expectations
Looking at your long list of New Year’s resolutions, you might feel discouraged to realise you’ve barely accomplished any…
Now all you’re left with is a few months in the year, way more goals than you can accomplish, and the lingering feeling that you’re going to fail.
If that’s how you’re feeling right now, you have two options:
- You can drown in an ocean of self-pity, hoping next year will be better
- Realise that you can’t accomplish everything, but still you can accomplish something (and that’s better than nothing!)
Yes, it would be amazing if you could:
- Write an entire novel
- Launch a new business
- Get in the best shape of your life
- Wake up every day at 5 AM
- Save $5000
…but with only four months left, that’s far from being realistic.
One of the most important steps for a good September reset routine is to drop unrealistic goals, in order to ensure you finish the year strong instead of feeling overwhelmed.
Do this simple exercise:
- Pull out your list of New Year’s resolutions
- Assess how much progress you’ve made on each (0% – 100%)
- Drop any goal you’re less than 50% toward achieving
- Rank the remaining ones in order of priority (based on the first step of this reset guide)
- Focus only on the top 1-3 goals and forget about the rest

3. Build a solid system
Motivation feels great at the beginning of a September reset ā but letās be honest, it doesnāt last.
Four months is a long time, and you wonāt always feel like showing up. Thatās why you needĀ to rely on systems, not willpower.
Here’s how to build an efficient system for your fall goals:
- Specific -> What is it exactly that you want to accomplish?
- Measurable -> What’s your definition of ‘done’?
- Attainable -> Are 4 months enough time?
- Relevant -> What is your ‘why’?
- Time-Bound -> What’s your ideal deadline?

4. Use the ‘Golden Hour’ rule for progress
Think you donāt have time for your goals? Check your average screen time ā chances are, youāre spending hours scrolling on your phone.
Thatās proof youĀ doĀ have time ā youāre just not spending it intentionally.
That’s where the Golden Hour rule comes in.
GOLDEN HOUR āŖ One hour of deep, focused work on what’s really important
Here are some examples of what the Golden Hour might look like, depending on your goal:
- Want to lose weight? āŖ 1 hour of daily exercise
- Dreaming of launching your blog? āŖ 1 hour of learning
- Want to write a book? āŖ 1 hour of daily writing
Now, let’s talk about when you should schedule your Golden Hour. Well, that’s up you!
Maybe you like waking up early in the morning and want to commit to it straight away.
Maybe your current job only allows you to squeeze in the Golden Hour before going to bed.
Or maybe your Golden Hour is broken down into chunks (20 minutes in the morning, 20 at lunch, and 20 at night).
It doesnāt matter when it happens ā what matters is that you commit.
5. Tweak your environment for success
Your environment has the power to make you succeed – or fail.
During your September reset, set up your surroundings to support your goals.
Here are some examples depending on what youāre working on:
Here are some examples of ways you could tweak your environment, depending on your goal:

What really helps me a lot is setting reasonable and achievable goals. Helps in all situations and is a huge motivator.
That’s true!
I learned about the Golden Hour from your article. Very interesting and educational! Thanks for giving me something new to try!
Thank you! Yeah, the Golden Hour is kind of something I just came up with, but I think it holds so much power š
Great tips. My goal for the last quarter is to be more consistent in all areas. Love the planner on the nightstand goal. Need to clear them off anyway so yay. Another goal is to declutter.
Those are all great goals for Q4 – you’ve got this! š
